October 1, 2018: Small Wonders

Life doesn’t get any better than this, or any worse, and what we get is just what we’re willing to find: small wonders, where they grow.” Barbara Kingsolver, Small Wonder

This last week was really hectic between getting ready for a show in Meredith and driving the 300 (one way) trip back and forth to our northern studio.  Days preceding any show are always jam packed with last minute details of labels, organization of displays and yes, inspirations of new ideas that just have to come out and be brought to fruition. Add reactions to hearing about the dismal political news and world events, or the unsettling troubles of loved ones , and it’s easy for me lose the ability to stay calm and centered.   I start feeling frazzled and “out of control”. I can’t fit or fix eveything that I want to do.  My usually positive attitude can start going down a slippery slope.

What I found that really gets me back into the “real world, is when I head outdoors with my camera.  My goal is to purposefully look for things that remind me of the small wonders in this teeming, often chaotic world of ours.  The simple act of being in nature has always had a calming effect on me.  But now with the intention of actively seeking for things of beauty, I find that it is the perfect way to bring my life back into focus.  In purposely looking for scenes that fill me with awe and/or curiosity,  the more I look, the more I see.  I’m brought into the present moment.  I get out of my churning, worrisome thoughts and reflect that right now, these are the realities in my life….not any nebulous and unnecessary worries about the future.  After returning from these walks, I find that my thoughts are clear and my spirit has been restored.

Whether we call them simple gifts or wonders; from the unexpected act of kindness from a stranger, and the giggles of a beloved grandchild, to the radiant beauty of a late blooming flower, they are all around us.  I think we all need gentle reminders from time to time, I know I do;  that there is simple beauty and precious gifts all around us, if we only take the time, to not only look for them, but to be grateful for their presence in our lives.

Timeless and timely advice. Taking the time to stop, notice and reflect on the small miracles that ride on the wake of daily chaos is what can truly add meaning to our existence. Just taking a moment to find a way to be inspired and thankful – whether pondering natural beauty or in total gratitude for the love and support of family and friends is something we all need each and every day. Thank you.
