Description
A red barn in winter, surrounded by snow, is a quintessential symbol of rural charm, warmth, and resilience, often evoking a sense of nostalgia for times when life seemed simpler. Red Barns are an iconic sight in New England, ofter celebrated in artwork from paintings to photography. This practice for farmers painting their barns red, actually started in the late 18th century. The frugal farmers in an attempt to preserve and protect the old, applied a protective varnish to the barn wooden surfaces. This varnish, consisitng of linseed oil, lime, and/or iron oxide, eventually turned to the red hue we associate with New England barns.**
