February 13, 2022: Let The Love Shine Through

In tumultuous times, when the daily news is filled with strife and turmoil, a holiday that celebrates love seems an anomaly. Yet, Valentine’s Day has been around in different forms for 1,527 years. Today, a walk through a greeting card aisle provides evidence that the love, traditionally celebrated on this holiday, has expanded over the centuries from primarily romantic love, to reflect different kinds of love: love of family, friends, co-workers, partners and self-love. The common thread through all of these forms of love is a “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties”. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/love

Spending time with others who love you, and who you love, reinforces the idea of our own individual self-worth, that we are in essence, lovable. It reminds us that we are not only worthy of love, but have something to offer this world of ours. In times of difficulty and challenge, the presence of love in our lives can bring a sense of joy, peace and most importantly hope.

Throughout history, love has been defined and explored through a variety of mediums. From poems and paintings, to literature and the cinema, love has been a complex subject that has both confused and entranced humanity. It can be difficult to put one’s feelings into words which is why Valentine Cards have become so popular. In a time of tweets and texts, receiving a handwritten card offers a more personal presentation. The sentiments can express our own gratitude for the love we have in our lives, as they are golden threads that weave through the tapestry of our days.

When searching for quotes on love, it was reaffirming to discover how the topic of love transcends history, shining it’s golden light through the darkest times. There were so many that touched my heart, it was a challenge to choose the ones that resonated the most. In honor of the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day, here’s a sampling of fourteen of my favorites. If you have ones that touch your heart, we invite you to share them in the comments below.
