What’s In A Name?

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” – Mother Teresa

Whenever we have finished a necklace or bracelet, I search for a special name to give the piece an identity and meaning.  The names can vary from completely whimsical, (I once named a beaded bracelet Pistachio Ice cream) to philosophical. Sometimes it will reflect what it reminds me of, sometimes what I see in the design, and at other times what the piece symbolizes.

In my newest design, Two Pines, I researched the meaning behind the symbol of two fir trees and discovered

“in 1922, it originated and trademarked the twin pines symbol used to represent North American cooperatives. “The pine tree is an ancient symbol of endurance and immortality. The two pines represent mutual cooperation—people helping people.”*

It started me thinking about the impact and power that happens when people come together in a cooperative spirit.  Rather than conflict, the envisioned and named purpose is one of cooperation.  Can you imagine what our world would be like if people joined in the spirit of the two pines and worked together rather than against each other?
