“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall

Both my husband Ron and I love spending time outdoors exploring the natural world that surrounds us.  In the cacophony of today’s noisy, technology driven world, it gives us a much needed respite, providing inspiration for our jewelry designs and restoring a sense of peace in our bodies and minds.

During the years I was a  teacher in an elementary school, I use to take my students weekly into natural areas   My intent was to help them appreciate and learn about the intricate ecosystems that helped the pond, meadows and forests thrive.  I also hoped to establish within them a life-long love affair with nature.  At the local college, I also taught teachers how to incorporate the study of nature into their academic curriculum, inspiring their students to be curious and most importantly care.

But with all the disturbing news about the impact of climate change, deregulation of laws that protect the environment, and the dismay when local woods were clear cut for development, this didn’t seem enough.  I felt a need to do something more than just the usual habits of recycling, reusing and reducing.

Although I’m no longer in the public schools, this desire to teach about the wonders of our world hasn’t ceased.  I write a weekly blogpost called Nature Corner for our local library and several times a year provide a nature programs for local kids. Sharing photographs on social media of the wonders we find on the trails, hopefully is a way to get others outdoors.  Caring about something is one way to help create the innate desire to protect.

In our website jewelry posts, I search for inspiring quotes about not only the beauty of our world, but the need to preserve and protect it. This quote in particular, inspired our next step.

“You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them.”
– Wangari Maathai

As a result, We have also decided to create a collection of jewelry where a percentage of the price will be donated to support an organization that promotes environmental awareness,  conservation and protects our natural resources. After extended research, we chose the Sierra Club Foundation

https://www.sierraclubfoundation.org who for ten years has achieved Charity Navigators highest 4-star rating.

Our ZoBangle Natural World Collection currently has four bracelets, but we will be adding to it.  A percentage of each one sold will be donated to this noteworthy organization.

In the daunting face of what needs to be done to protect and preserve our natural world, it’s a small thing, but something we can do.  As Lao Tzu once said,

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
